These are household accounts from sittings in and around Bacho, written as stories. The next reserve will follow that household’s own bills.
The Waema stall, after the engine
Farid Waema and his sister sell dried fish. In early 2024 the boat they share with a cousin needed an engine they could not postpone, because the cousin’s weeks on the water were also their supply. Their reserve, written the year before, had been set to cover two weeks of stall rent and rice plus a repair share. The target had annoyed Farid when Wanita first read it out. He said it assumed a bad month he did not want to plan for while sales were fine.
They used the reserve for the mechanic and for those two weeks. The stall stayed open. What the page had not prepared them for was the argument afterward: his sister wanted the old target restored before Hari Raya spending, and he wanted the festival table left alone. The addendum from the annual visit split the difference in writing — a thinner target until the next good selling stretch, and the festival named as spending money rather than as a raid on the reserve. Farid still thinks the first target was stern. He also says the sternness is why the mechanic was paid without a new loan.
I came for the rubber months. We wrote that on the day the buyer pays, 6,000 baht moves before anyone talks about a new pump. I have kept that rule for two seasons. The quiet months are still tight. They are no longer a surprise that sends me to my brother.
The written plan was clear. I had wanted the first sitting to finish in an hour, and it ran long because we kept finding expenses I had not written down — the cousin’s school term, the fuel for my mother’s clinic visits. That was useful, and it was also tiring. I would have liked a warning that the hour was a hope, not a promise, when the notebook is thin.
I only needed the roof priced. The one-page note stopped my husband and me from each keeping a different number in our heads. We still have not saved the full amount. At least we are arguing about the same figure.
A first sitting can run long.
